Christening Gifts for Boys and Girls

Christening Gifts – A Potted History

Popularised by the Victorians (as were many of our continuing traditions) the giving of Christening gifts was initially a small item of monetary value that was considered to be an investment for the child’s future.  These small items often included such things as toys, religious items, jewellery and ornaments. These gifts would be kept and treasured, passed down as future heirlooms or saved as a future nest egg.  Sometimes a lucky sixpence or silver sovereign would be given to mark the occasion.

Over time the emphasis changed from gifts with a purely financial significance to items of a more intrinsic value.  At this point sterling silver became a very popular choice for christening gifts and keepsakes.  Silver cutlery, spoons and egg cups were the top choices along with teapots, cups and trinkets.

Christening Gifts Today

These days many of these traditional items are still given alongside other now classic silver christening gifts such as silver photo frames, moneyboxes and christening bangles or bracelets.  A christening is a celebratory occasion to which close friends and family are invited, many of which will take photographs of the event.  Christening photo albums or photo frames are therefore a great gift choice allowing the proud parents to store and display all their favourite photographs together in one place.  Other popular choices include first tooth & curl pots, Christening spoons, loving cups and christening plates.

Christening Jewellery

Baby Jewellery makes a lovely christening gift for both boys and girls.  A classic christening bangle or baby christening bracelet can be suitable for both and makes a wonderful heirloom to pass down the generations, never losing its beauty or appeal.  Add a personalised engraved plaque and it makes the gift even more special.  A silver cross pendant can also be a suitable christening gift for a boy or girl and can be worn for many years. When young, the child can wear the pendant on a short chain which can then be replaced with a longer chain as they grow.
